How does Ayurveda work?

Prevention and Treatment- Ayurveda’s main goal is to promote health and longevity , prevent illness and help raise awareness of dis-ease in our lives rather than merely managing symptoms to optimize future well-being.

Relationship-centred Care- The ideal practitioner-patient relationship encourages patient autonomy, and values the needs and insights of both parties, which is an essential contributor to the healing process.

Individuality- Ayurveda’s focus is patient care- on the unique needs and nature of the person who has an illness rather than the illness that has the person.

What is panchkarma?

Panchkarma can be literally translated to “five procedures”. These five procedures include 1. Medicinally induces vomiting 2. Purgation 3. Enema 4. Blood cleansing 5. Herbal nasal instillations. These procedures help in general body cleansing, detoxification, removal of excessive body waste, rejuvenation, immunity building and energy restoration. Some body therapies such as Ayurvedic abhyanga (massage), Steaming, Oil pulling, Shirodhara (oil -flow in head), Udvartana (powder massage) are also included as complimentary procedures of panchkarma.

Panchkarma is offered as a treatment option in  many Ayurveda centres. The milder versions of the same can be done at home also under Ayurvedic supervision. To know more click here

Does Ayurveda means home remedies?

A home remedy is a treatment to cure a disease or ailment that employs certain spices, vegetables, or other common items usually found at home. Home remedies may or may not have medicinal properties that treat or cure or provide temporary relief for a particular ailment, as they are typically passed along by laypersons (which have been facilitated in recent years by the Internet). They are effective in minor issues such as simple sprains, minor lacerations, headaches, cold etc.

Ayurveda is a scientific stream of alternative medicine with its own approach of diagnosis, prevention, healing, pharmacology, surgery, and healthy lifestyle. Home remedies might be considered a very minute part of Ayurveda that people have adopted since generations. But besides home remedies, field of Ayurveda is very vast which envelops many sections such as yoga, naturopathy, etc.

Are Ayurvedic herbs and medicines hot in potency?

In addition to taste, efficacy, qualities of any medicine, Ayurveda focuses particularly on the influence of Hot and Cold – which is referred to as potency, or virya.  This has nothing to do with the temperature of medicine or food (i.e. Hot soup v. Ice cream). Rather, every component of medicine has either a heating or a cooling effect, which determines how an ingredient will impact each of the mind/body types (i.e. Vata, Pitta, Kapha), which are the building blocks of our body. Thus both types of medicines i.e. Which cause heat in body and which have cooling impact are present in Ayurveda. A skilled practitioner can determine their usage based on patient’s requirements.

Does Ayurveda have any side effects?

The ancient practice of Ayurvedic medicines has clearly helped lots of people create healthier lives. As everyone understands ayurvedic products are made from nature i.e. Herbs, metallic or non-metallic elements, minerals, animal products, etc. What is not well known is that- the raw materials are processed and refined naturally and scientifically (trituration, distillation, extraction, etc.) to remove their toxic, harmful properties and enhance their medicinal properties. The improper processing is the cause of trace elements found in various organs. Also, like any other medical system Ayurveda therapies have contraindications and the potential for side effects but this is of particular concern when therapies are used incorrectly or administered improperly or taken without the direction of a trained practitioner or self- prescribed. So if treatment is done carefully and classically under proper guidance, these side effects can be avoided altogether.

What does this practice offer for new and old patients?

Also, if you are currently undergoing treatment for a mental or emotional disorder, it is recommended that you continue your current treatment program and inform me about the same.

Why does your Ayurvedic treatment entail diet regime?

Modern day food (fast food, junk food, frozen food, pesticides, genetically modified crops, etc.) Is one of the major causes of various kinds of illnesses, lifestyle disorders and reduced immunity. Until the cause of any disorder is not uprooted completely, there are chances of recurrence.

It’s a well-known fact that certain kinds of foods are harmful in certain disorders. For e.g.: high-purine food in gout, sweet and heavy food in diabetes, oily food for sore throat, etc.

Also, following a strict ayurvedic diet forms part of the ayurvedic treatment method because focus of treatment is on the whole person, and balancing or harmonizing body, mind and spirit. Ayurveda emphasizes that the diet we take has a close influence on our mind and body. Specific dietary adjustments serve to maintain the balance of specific doshas and thus entail perfect health. Appropriate diet can be used to remove or neutralize toxins in the body. According to prakriti (basic nature of body) and Vrikruti (disease or imbalance of doshas) we provide personal diet chart and eating plans.

How long do Ayurveda treatments take to show results?

The time required to treat any disease depends on many factors- type of disease, chronicity and severity of the disease, patient’s compliance .In acute infections like fever, cough, and seasonal illness or when diseases are managed correctly in their initial stages, Ayurveda shows results quickly and effectively, and it reinforces the general condition of the body. Common ailments are generally controlled within 24 hours in those who adhere to all aspects of treatment. The problem with chronic illnesses in most cases is that they have many upadravas (side-disorders). For chronic illnesses, complete management may require weeks or months using a combination of Ayurvedic diet, lifestyle, medicine and treatment to revert back to its healthy condition. Considering that most long-term conditions are present in the body for years or decades, and the patients try most of the conventional treatments before seeking alternative treatments, this actually seems quite reasonable.
