Living the life inside out
Thanks to the worldwide homestay situation, one fine day I was colouring in an Outer Space book with my three year old son. My son was colouring the whole page of alien + outer space + spacecraft with purple (his current favourite). And, I was reminding him to use different colours in different parts.
He kept asking me- Why not purple colour everywhere, Mamma? I tried reasoning with him with multiple answers- “Everything purple wont look good” or “I cannot make out what this colouring is about” or “different colours will look more beautiful” or “do you want to see if you like some other colour too”.
His only answer to all my arguments was “I like Purple colour”.
So, I took few deep breaths, calmed myself mentally and started watching him colour everything purple. I enjoyed tremendously seeing him all engrossed with his “painting the page purple”
When I looked back at the whole scenario from a simpler perspective, I realised his simple thought process.
Purple is my favourite, hence it is beautiful”
My complicated thought process-
‘Three year old is supposed to colour better than this/another colouring paper wasted/how can I pin this on his nursery wall”
While my little son and all other children are experts on living the life from within to outside, we struggle to do the same.
This is one of the reasons why children’s lives are so uncomplicated (and of course no financial planning, society burden or emotional complications)
Living simply has become most difficult nowadays.
Happiness, contentment, success, relationships, wealth, health- everything comes from within.
Behaviour based on other’s expectations, current trends or seeking approval is a plastic life and not real. It is like living while looking at yourself in a social mirror. It doesn’t nourish anything within us. It leads to chaos and confusion. It spirals into a vicious cycle of new behaviour- outside approval- dissatisfaction- stress- new behaviour.
Instead of living life outside-in, if we start living from inside for the outside world, it starts making more sense. It adds substance in our daily living. The choices we make come from within us. They align with our inner thoughts. This whole process makes our journey of life more concrete and meaningful.
Start at the beginning of the day. Take couple of deep breaths as soon as you wake up. Become aware of your state of mind. Think something from your gut (not your mind and heart) that makes you happy. It can be a as simple as a cup of coffee. Smile at yourself. Smile in the mirror while brushing the teeth. Make this a habit. This simple habit without taking any time, adds so much quality to the day. It helps you align more and more with your path and goals in life.
There is no downside to this simple practice. Do it and see where it leads you within yourself.
